Mercedes returns home from film school to join her father, Víctor Gaviria, in the shooting of his controversial feature film The Animal’s Wife. She seeks to define her craft as a filmmaker as she challenges the path of following in her famous father’s footsteps. When Mercedes was growing up, her father filmed their family incessantly, but never considered these home movies to be part of his art. In the encounter of both filmmakers’ ways of looking at cinema, her mother’s reticence and her brother’s stubbornness, Mercedes contemplates her family’s endless contradictions in order to find her own beginning.

“The Calm After the Storm (2020) by young Colombian filmmaker Mercedes Gaviria, is a bright example of these new [Latin American] gazes, which aim to renew and rebuild new paths in Latin American filmmaking, and break away from ideologies rooted in past generations, by exposing and questioning them.” – DesistFilm, Ivonne Sheen
