Pepe Sánchez Campo is in the prime of his life. His corrupt real estate business is booming, and he is about to marry the love of his life, the aristocratic Constanza. However, Pepe’s good fortune is about to end due to the outbreak of war. His construction site is taken over by a peasant guerrilla group demanding justice. Loosely based on the misfortune that the former emperors Maximilian and Charlotte of Habsburg encountered in Mexico, the film dramatizes the imaginary fall of centuries of colonialism, embodied in a lovesick criminal businessman whose destiny is altered by political violence and human passions.
