Akin is one of the Cuban doctors working in Brazil in 2018. With the election, the cooperation between Brazil and Cuba ends. Doctors are asked to return to their country of origin. Akin is at a crossroads. Return to Cuba or settle in Brazil?

Akin’s Desert tells the story of Akin, one of the many Cuban doctors in the Mais Médicos Program, which was in effect in Brazil until mid-2018. The film begins a few months before the election.

Bernard Lessa

Bernard Lessa is a film director and producer, based in Vitória, Espírito Santo State. Graduated in Cinema & Audiovisual at Universida de Federal Fluminense, he is a founding partner of Rede Filmes and has written and directed the short films Tejo Mar(2013), Sopro, Uivo e Assobio (2015), and the feature A Matéria Noturna (2021), which received awards at the Brasília Film Festival and Olhar deCinema in Curitiba.
