Yuli is the topila (auxiliary police) of San Pablo Begu´, a mountain community in the north of Oaxaca where the inhabitants on a rotating basis assume the responsibilities of self-government on a rotating and honorary basis (communality) along with their work and personal activities. Guarding the entrance to the town, she stops a group of machinery that is trying to enter the community to begin construction of a highway. When she notifies the town, no authority is aware of the project and the community goes on alert; they will have to decide whether or not to accept the highway project and its consequences.

Luna Marán

Luna Marán is a director, writer, and producer from the Zapotec community of Guelatao de Juárez, Oaxaca. She is the director of three features: I look so much like you (2011); Tío Yim (2019) “one of the hidden gems of documentary cinema” according to BBC; and, Bucan tu rachhidu’ (2023) which received a Special Mention at Kanua Festival. Producer of The Blue Years (2017), nominated for Best First Film 2018 Ariel Mexican Academy Awards; The Revolt (2022); and The end of the first times (2024). Co-producer of Summer (2022) (FICM Special Mention); Ruster Dust (2021) (Best Central American Film – Icaro Festival); Koo (2020; and Through Tola. Luna worked as the head writer for the Paramount+ Native Narratives project (2022), and developmental writer for an animated series (NDA) for Panea Media (2022).
