in downtown Vancouver from Aug 25 – Sept 4.

OPENING NIGHT FILM

The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz
Ensayo de un crimen

Mexican writer Cecilia Fuentes will be in attendance at Opening Night to introduce The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz (Ensayo de un crimen), one of the finest comedies directed by one of the master filmmakers of all times, Luis Buñuel. The exhibition copy of this film has been digitally restored by the Cineteca Nacional in Mexico City. Cecilia will also be in Vancouver to present her book MUJER EN PAPEL, based on the memoirs of her mother, actress Rita Macedo, who is one of the protagonists of this film. Cecilia Fuentes is also the daughter of renowned Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes.

NEW DIRECTORS COMPETITION

Discover the eight Latin American films that will compete for the prize of Best New Director. A Youth Jury from Canada and Latin America will award $2,500 to the winning director.

SPOTLIGHT ON MÓNICA DEL CARMEN

VLAFF welcomes back the extraordinary Mexican actress Mónica del Carmen to present two of her most recent film projects.

RETROSPECTIVE: Jayro Bustamante

We are pleased to announce a retrospective of the Guatemalan director Jayro Bustamante, whose first film, Ixcanul, elicited a tremendous standing ovation when it debuted at the Berlin Film Festival in 2015. His next two films, Tremors (Temblores) and La Llorona, were also highly acclaimed. La Llorona was nominated to the Golden Globes in 2020, solidifying Jayro’s place as a key filmmaker in the contemporary Latin American film scene.
